Think we need to be careful amplifying the opinion that Harris will crush Trump in the debate. It's certainly a possibility, but setting the bar low for Trump is not good strategy. Trump has demonstrated an ability to steamroll through debates. His tactic of Gish galloping, that is presenting a firehose of lies making it tough to refute each one, has been effective. Certainly Harris will be prepared for this, but she will need to bring her A game. Trump is not a walkover.

@mastodonmigration Also a "win" is not about being right, it's being SEEN to be right in in the eyes of those you want to sway. So logic, composure and having the right answers is not what decides the outcome. The Gish gallop (nice term!) will work on the core MAGA. The trick is exposing it to the persuadable. So you are right, this is NOT easy.

Yup. There are tactics to deal with a Gish gallop: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gish_gallop
How to counter a Gish gallop:
"Because there are too many falsehoods to address... choose one as an example. Choose the weakest, dumbest, most ludicrous argument that your opponent has presented and tear this argument to shreds.

Do not budge from the issue. Don't move on until you have decisively destroyed the nonsense and clearly made your point.
Call it out: name the strategy. "This is a strategy called the 'Gish Gallop'. Do not be fooled by the flood of nonsense you have just heard."

@mastodonmigration @DemocracyMattersALot I'm concerned about this too-- Trump is currently winning the expectations game on the debate, i.e. setting the bar so low that anything other than being completely obliterated by Harris could be perceived as a win. I mean, there's a good chance she does obliterate him, but anyone can have an off night, be sick, etc. This is complicated by the fact that Big News will spin the debate to favor Trump no matter what happens. So we do need to be careful IMO.

Agreed. I was expecting Biden to crush Trump at the debate, and we all know how that went.

One thing about a Gish gallop is that it can be very disorienting. As a lawyer Harris has professional training, but needs to have solid tactics to deal with the inevitable rapid fire nonsense.

I don't think debate style matters, because Trump isn't there for any sort of debate about actual platform positions. I have faith Harris knows this and is preparing accordingly.

Agreed. But it always pays to be wary of wild cornered beasts. They can be unpredictsble.
