do you really believe that it'd be retired because That Is The Rules
like I'm sorry but come on

@halcy yes actually because ICANN know that if they bend the rules now they will never hear the end of it
-
@halcy i expect them to grant the maximum length extension possible ofc.

@erincandescent @halcy .su (Soviet Union) still exists, so it’s not inconceivable that .io could be granted a similar exception

@erincandescent @f00fc7c8 I just think that "it would cost several hundred million to migrate" is an argument that is convincing to a lot of companies, some of which and politicians and that's at least not trivial to argue away
maybe I'm overestimating the impact it'd have, or how much googleflare or whoever would Dislike This, and maybe it's less of a hill to die on type situation than I think, idk

@halcy @f00fc7c8 I can’t really think of a lot of big companies that have .io domains (github.io aside - but thats from a startup that they bought); and largely not in a way that would be too hard to migrate in ~10 years
But if IANA make an exemption, they know that they will get into an argument with any country renaming/forking/etc for the rest of time citing IO as precedent
