The difference between AWD & 4wd is typically 4WD vehicles have what’s called a transfer case. This allows you to drive it in numerous configurations (2L, 2L, 2H, 4H). Transfer cases can also be disengaged (N). AWD vehicles do not have this, and when you are in neutral everything still runs through the transmission. The damage here is that without the engine running nothing is pumping transmission fluid through the radiator and keeping it cool. it’s just stagnant and not circulating. With a 4WD as long as you put the case in neutral (or whatever your car manufacturer states to disengage) you can flat tow as it practically disconnects the entire drive train. You can even put the transmission in park and nothing will happen because it’s bypassing it.

i wouldn't recommend towing it as in the first example (bc why) but you can flat tow a 4wd with a disengaged transfer case.

@[email protected] i know, it's such a stupid fucking marketing thing. nobody actually cares to explain the difference between 4wd and awd to consumers

@[email protected] which is unfortunate because there’s actual use you can get out of a transfer case compared to AWD. I love my Subaru forester mind you, but it has 3 limited slip differentials. I don’t have a differential lock or the ability to go 4H. So it is somewhat limited in its off-roading capabilities. I’d love to do trails but I don’t have time nor do I have money to throw away towards proper tires & suspension.

@[email protected] also people get stuck on trails in their AWD all the time bc they think it makes them invincible
-
@puppygirlhornypost2 Is that what the difference is?!
Thanks - after all these years, now I finally know. -
@[email protected] yes that's what the difference is.

@[email protected] it's less likely to see a vehicle marketed as "4wd" usually they go 4x4 instead to specify but yeah.
