Interesting new Bluesky feature: you can detach your post when someone else quotes you.

Want to see features like this come to Mastodon?
-
@stefan I know this is a cynical take but I don't think donating will help safety features get built.
-
@[email protected] i love your sense of humor! lolsob

@kevin From the conversations I've seen around this, a lot of the bigger features are better suited for people with deeper understanding of ActivityPub and the Mastodon code base, in other words, a full-time employee rather than volunteers.
And for that, funding is needed.
I don't really have any insight into the Mastodon team's finances or roadmap myself, but this is how the situation has been explained.

@jdp23 Hah, staying hopeful!

@stefan is there any data behind it ?
Did anyone got success to get something merged into mastodon vanilla by giving money to Gargron ?
In my experience, Gargron did what Gargron wanted unless there was some pressure and he felt socially pushed to do it.
And who he was feeling socially closed changed a lot in the years.
To put it another way, while he might have listenned to common folks in 201x.
Since then social pressure is only coming from the silicon valley type. -
@mxfraud Yeah, no data, I'm afraid, just what I've seen discussed on this topic.

@stefan @kevin I think this is where @thisismissem is worth having a chat to about this. She's already done a lot of work on trust and safety for Mastodon.

@onepict @stefan @kevin even as a person working full-time on the fediverse, a lot of the stuff that's protocol level or larger changes, I need dedicated sponsors for due to the amount of time required.
I'm currently sitting at β¬1050 in community support, which doesn't allow more complicated issues the time.

Jupiter Rowlandreplied to Stefan Bohacek last edited by@Stefan Bohacek @Jon This very same thing won't work in the Fediverse, however. It would require giving anyone and everyone out there unlimited permission to alter your posts.
Try this on Hubzilla or (streams) which not only have a 14-year-old quote-post implementation, but even require permissions to send someone posts or receive their posts.

Yeah, totally agreed that donating to @[email protected] is likely to have much more impact on fediverse trust and safety than donating to Mastodon gGmbH. As https://oisaur.com/@renchap/112879553557675787 explains, Mastodon doesn't have a feature-by-feature budget, so while donations help them grow their developer team and make progress in general, the effect on safety is diffuse.

It's more challenging on the fediverse because of multiple software implementations but doesn't mean it "won't work". Just like GoToSocial's implementation of interaction controls, progress can be made without full adoption. As we've discussed a bunch of times Hubzilla, (streams), etc have had a real opportunity here but cultural barriers have prevented it from happening so far.

Agreed it's not an either-or. For those who have sufficient funds, donating to instance admins, trust and safety focused individuals, trust and safety non-profits like IFTAS, and core development teams are all valuable. But, most people have to prioritize their donations, so it makes sense to think about what offers the most bang for the buck for people who are concerned about safety.
And oops on the budget / roadmap mistake, good catch, fixed now.
