Mussels can filter around 3 liters per hour per individual (called the clearance rate)! An average mussel farm yields 5 tons per acre, equating to ~500,000 individuals, so an acre of mussels can filter 1.5 million liters of water per hour in optimal conditions! This clearance rate can vary, though, with the mussels clearing less water if it's clogged with sediment or if plankton which are lower in food quality are prevalent! #clamFacts
