i think itโs got to be cricut machines
(not counting things like furniture and cars and stuff that people regularly purchase and then resell with wear/downsizing/taste changes/etc.)

@molly0xfff they all thought they were buying a bicycle for cheap, not knowing that the training wheels were permanently welded on. That's why I bought a Silhouette.
-
@molly0xfff the Salvation Army and Goodwill type stores in Singapore / Malaysia have a ton of soy milk machines
They are really useful, in a western context, but back there itโs like โI.. have to clean this? Instead of buying good homemade soy milk anywhere for $1!?โ
I used to get a kick out of seeing the rows and rows of fancy $400 soy milk machines. Itโs such an aspirational dream.

@rasterweb @tankgrrl ooc what do you use them for?
-
(cricuts are hobbyist cutting machines. judging by the photos online, the software for them forces you to use ๐๐ฝ๐พ๐ ๐ปโด๐๐)

@molly0xfff @tankgrrl I mostly cut vinyl. I either apply vinyl to a thing (think decorative stickers or signage), or I use them as stencils for sandblasting, screen printing, spray painting, even making PCBs!
Iโve cut paper as well (paper bats for Halloween) and such.
Hereโs a few things: https://rasterweb.net/raster/tag/silhouette/

@molly0xfff Now I know what a cricut machine is. Never too old to learn!
-
@molly0xfff Apparently they are reasonably common among model train people for cutting styrene sheets for making custom buildings, but I've never tried myself.
-
@simonbp that sounds like a lot of fun!

@BartWronski @molly0xfff you need to be eating a LOT of meat to make use of a sous vide machine regularly :')
-
@molly0xfff
They're pretty neat for a few months, finicky when you have to change the cutting doohickey, and the only approved software requires a monthly fee. It's like a bizzaro 3D printer. -
@molly0xfff Not a bad bet. Though I will note that a considerable number of elementary school teachers have and actively use cricut machines, and they don't tend to use that "Hobby Lobby home decor" font.
-
@molly0xfff Going with treadmill/exercise machine.

@dotstdy @molly0xfff and, IMO, for meats, it's too much hassle for an incremental improvement and something you can get with a proper technique without it. (It is a game changer for eggs and fish, though)
Almost everyone I know who got one had an excitement phase, "sous vide everything", then it sat in a drawer until they sold it. (And I'm talking about foodies who cook regularly)
