Every tiresome ‘do this to improve your instant ramen’ video is also just people discovering what literal children have been doing since our parents first left us at home for the first time

Not saying you can’t take joy in making this stuff up, but literally any time you think you’ve invented something delicious it’s probably not true. Just eat it and don’t claim the invention

@skinnylatte I felt a little scandalized when all my favorite YouTube cooks did nearly identical videos about how to make biang biang noodles, and then they toss off a quick mention that they learned it from ordering the biang biang noodle kit from Xi'an Famous Foods. Like, OK, but why are you replicating and profiting from the instructions that come with Xi'an's "how to make biang biang noodles" kit?

@carrideen yeah one of the reasons I mostly look to Chinese social media for Chinese food recipes now. There’s a lot of regurgitated and not creative or good tasting stuff after it’s gone through this process a few times.

My spouse and I do the same for Indian recipes. So many great Indian food videos by people who actually make the cuisine.

@seanbala @carrideen yeah, and again it’s not that other folks can’t make good Indian food, but I’m also looking for a certain degree of regional nuance. That’s why I love regional Indian cuisine folks like kannamma cooks, specially for the Indian food I like. I get that people maybe want an accessible way to get into any Indian or Chinese cooking.

@skinnylatte Similarly, I get (maybe unfairly) frustrated with people who post on cooking forums to ask "What dish did I just make?" when they threw something together they liked. Probably someone, somewhere has a name for it! Who cares? Enjoy what you made, give it your own name if you need to call it something.

@rhiannonstone haha, was just having a friend say they hate it when they bring some Thai dish to a thing and people want to know what’s The Name Of The Thing and can’t accept that he just put stuff together
