I did however witness an interaction that made me want to roll my eyes.
Some guy at the ramen bar counter was telling the Japanese American chef, that he really loved watching Karate Kid…
-
Made me think of how the first time I came to the Bay Area, I was eating at a Chinese dumpling restaurant in Redwood City and the mom at the next table asked me to help her kid with her Japanese homework..
-
The mind boggles.
I'm mystified and I can't avoid trying to guess what prompted them to say that.
Did they hear in passing that Miyagi San was from Okinawa and that's the only Japanese-related bit of information they remember?
-
@vruz @skinnylatte I don't think it even goes that deep. It's just "that guy's Japanese, I know Karate's Japanese, therefore I can relate to him on a deep personal level".
There's a leap of logic involved, certainly.
-
@vruz karate = Japanese = Mr Miyagi = same as the ramen guy, I guess
-
He probably didn't even know that the chef was Japanese American, so it's pointless to try to guess what connection he made.
