For anyone looking to adjust their media diet, now’s a great time to consider escaping The Algorithms with RSS.

Good point about being selective and avoiding the firehose. Especially if your reading time is limited.
-
@molly0xfff your blog link is a 404, should be this: https://www.dashes.com/posts/
-
@molly0xfff do you have strong thoughts on RSS vs Atom? Most folks won’t and shouldn’t care, but curious if there are hidden considerations for publishing a feed these days.
-
Molly, I subscribed to your OPML list at feedland.org. This means it reads all the feeds in your list, and it's dynamic, so if you add or remove a feed from the list, it will subscribe or unsubscribe.
Here's the page where all the fees are listed.
https://feedland.org/?subscriptionlist=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mollywhite.net%2Fblogs.opml.xml
And a timeline of new posts to all the feeds in your OPML list.

@molly0xfff I need an RSS feed of your RSS feeds.
-
@skippy I don't have strong thoughts
-
@SpaceLifeForm yeah — I've built up this list of feeds over years and so I'm used to the volume and pretty good at skimming through it, but it's a lot to just suddenly jack in to
-
@molly0xfff with all due respect, I don't think it's ever a good idea to ONLY follow RSS.
For one thing, RSS is generally not used by #RestOfWorld #independent #journalist s.
And second, it disincentivizes discovering new sources.
The only time I think it is worth using RSS for me is if I have someone I like following that I would like to always hear amidst the current chaotic online discourse.
But I will contest the idea that RSS is 'fair' in 2024. Different times, different rhymes.
-
@molly0xfff I've been using RSS for a long time. Recently I decided to use it for everything that has a feed and I'm really happy with the result.
My recent additions include:
- Newsletters
- YouTube channels
- websites like Hacker News and Lobsters -

@AhmetAkkoc who said to only use RSS? regarding ROW journalists, even if they don't have RSS feeds, there are some good tools that can ingest webpages to an RSS reader

@molly0xfff it's a mistake to frame algorithms as bad. Even here, there are far too many toots from people I follow for me to ever read them all. An algorithm that filters for high quality toots I'm interested in would add a lot of value.
-
@ddonnell the caps are to denote it's tongue-in-cheek. #NotAllAlgorithms, etc
-
@molly0xfff Reminding me of a great #zine I picked up recently RSS is (not) Dead By Audra Mcname. Lovely that they put the full version online!
-
@ktneely oh my god that rules
-
@ktneely oh no i think i hugged their site to death
-
@molly0xfff LOL, I agree. I found my copy at Powell's, but didn't realize they had put the entire book online until today when your post reminded me of it.
The art and writing are so great, and I love the new stuff I didn't even know about!
