So, AFAICT, Brazilians basically didn’t pick #mastodon at all. I’m sure some came here, though I’d bet it was through existing connections to the network here. But by and large, bsky and threads seem to have been where many ended up (for now at least).
I don’t know much about Brazil and whether the Fedi had a presence there or not, but I’d wager that there’s probably a bit of a debrief/RCA to be had amongst fedi-advocates.
Conceptually though, the “Twitter migration” may just be over now.

For me, I think I’m not too interested in the “just invite your friends”, “start an instance”, “build a community” and “donate!” calls in so far as they are driven by “user growth” and “twitter capture”.
All good ideas in general, but for me the focus (at least now) is building good communities and good systems for that. Not on getting Twitter users and growing. Not “embracing threads” because that’s not growth either.

The elephant in the room is that doing that without user growth & more donations is maybe much harder than many want to admit.
Moreover, now that there’re multiple protocols and ecosystems with similar ish ideas around dismantling big social, some likely with more money and better dev capacity, there’s even the question of whether the Fedi can remain a compelling option for long.
I think it can, but IMO it’s likely gotta recalibrate a bit. In ways likely happening already in same corners.

A while ago, I saw some people complaining about Bolsonaro fans arriving on the Fediverse.
It's pretty sad to think that only disinfo agents, and not actual Brazilian people, consider Fedi worthy of their time…

A key issue for Fedi advocates on masto is the monoculture-ification of the platform. No algorithms means it’s mostly unavoidable, and the system of “cultural purity through vigilance and pestering” means it’s like to be in your face at some point.
It’s unfortunate that culture policing became a loud phenomenon with monoculture ambitions here. It’d be nice if defederation were just a quiet thing that happened.
Opt-in federation may be the best way forward.
