If you're even moderately interested in #federation etc., and the costs thereof, then I can only recommend this #Bluesky thread by @hazelweakly (one of the admins/makers of the #Mastodon instance Hachyderm).

Those numbers, bloody hell. Interesting conclusion, too!

People don’t understand how important this is to scaling decentralization. Even the data isn’t that big of a deal. But the traffic? Game changer For reference: on mastodon, hachyderm goes through 1TB+ of egress data a day. The network charges for that alone would bankrupt most people [contains quote post or other embedded content]

@czottmann @hazelweakly this thread does make me wonder: we currently use server to server, so mesh network, but what if it were more star network? Server to relay to server?

@thisismissem @czottmann That would probably help a lot! But dns makes that really hard (you can’t serve content from a domain you don’t own) and trusted content problems are a bigger issue on mastodon because of the federation style
With ATproto the data is hosted in one place so nobody else is really downloading untrusted content and then syndicating it in an automated fashion. That alone prevents a whole category of trust issues mastodon needs to figure out
