it's kind of amazing that amazon gets away with selling someone else's product, and prominently above the fold putting a large "COMPETITIVELY PRICED ITEM" and linking to their amazon basics undercut sku.

And dear god, could we put a pin in the whole AI basilisk thing and spend a hype cycle or two on making parametric search that that has a baseline level of not being garbage? It beggars belief how badly all these sites manage to fuck up search on structured data.
-
I would love to go to the local hardware store and bypass all this nonsense, btw. In fact, we did that first! And they confidently sold us the wrong shape bulb, and don't stock the one we require.
And it's not some weird specialty bulb from 1920s cinema projectors or somesuch. It's the bog standard "one of those big recessed ceiling ones". How do you not carry them, do you want me to shop online because that's how you get me to shop online
-
It's so exhausting. I know exactly the thing I need. And yet no matter how much I restrict the search these fucking vector space pieces of shit keep going "... you seem to be looking for light bulbs, have you considered this crazy straw dull green halogen bulb they use in horror films, I know you typed the words 'BR30 E26 soft white LED' and then selected all those things again in parametric search, but..."
-
"oh and also we're out of those lol, but if we tell you then you'll leave the website and that tanks our engagement metrics"
-
Okay I have purchased the stupid bulbs. It's ridiculous that it took this long, please tell me again how capitalism creates efficient markets or whatever the fuck this was.
-
@danderson well they didn't say who it was efficient for
-
@petrillic I can't see this being efficient for anyone involved tbh. As far as I can tell the sum total of human misery has increased across the board in this transaction
-
@petrillic Hell even if you assume that a misery farmer is trying to profit off this, it's a piss poor inefficient way to farm misery, so they must be having a bad time too!

@danderson I just always look at Amazon's “You bought a ladder, would you like to buy 15 more ladders?" and wonder what the hell people are doing in this world.

@danderson Amazon needs a few antitrust laws just for their way of doing business…
