I find the dogmatic opposition to FPGAs in some retro communities very funny. I almost want to commission a DIP carrier for BGAs, where you can reflow the FPGA inside and then snap the DIP casing shut around it. There ya go, a brand new Atari ST blitter chip, in original form factor. All the inconvenience of the old form factor, combined with the markup of me having to do extra work!

@danderson is there a 5v fpga nowadays? otherwise i suppose you'd need to pack in a regulator and logic level shifters?
i've done this some time ago i feel no regrets: https://github.com/lkundrak/yac64pla/

@lkundrak Yeah you'd need to pack some regulators onboard too. Not sure how tiny they make switchers these days, it might get a spot big for the DIPs.
