“Under [Stallman’s] ideological leadership, the free software movement is unsafe, particularly for women. Women represent just 3% of the free software community, compared to 23% of industry programmers generally. This is no accident.”
This, 100%. Thank you for saying out in the open what we have all lived, survived, observed, and known to be true for decades. Now that F/OSS can’t look away, what will we do about it? The fish rots from the head, after all…

@cyberlyra I'm curious if there are other reasons for the low participation of women in open source. A toxic/sexist culture, with no damping effect from a formal HR organisation, likely is one. But I'm also thinking about women having less time to spend on open source side projects but it's common for them to carry a bigger load of family and household tasks.

@Dany By that same logic, men have more time to contribute to open source projects because they are *evading* a fair share of household and domestic labor, making for greater gender imbalance in this &many walks of life.
If you think women have less time because they're saddled with more care work and domestic chores, then for chrissakes pick up more of the damn slack and demand all your male friends do too.
That said, a toxic/sexist culture is rampan and continual. It's not just "one" reason.
