oh, holy shit. My eGPU Just Works now. Like, I think better than it did under windows.
it seems to work when I hot plug it in and out. And it remembers my display config, so I don't have to screw around with figuring out which adapter (on the same monitor) is the hdmi (internal gpu) or display port (egpu). I can just turn off the hdmi adapter. And it turns back on when I unplug the egpu.
fuck yeah, Fedora 41

@jenniferplusplus yoo are eGPUs good now? Usb3?
-
@crmsnbleyd thunderbolt, actually. And yeah, I've been using this setup for years. It's a little expensive, but I get to have my cake and eat it too, with my thin and light gaming laptop. As long as I'm ok with only gaming at my desk, which I totally am.

@jenniferplusplus I'm quite curious! Could you share more details con your setup? Hardware parts in particular.

@jenniferplusplus What brand GPU is in host and external? Are you same-to-same (AMD iGPU - AMD eGPU) or are you cross vendor (nvidia eGPU).
I am deeply curious if it’s intel iGPU and nvidia eGPU, nvidia optimus.
Hotplug —> I’m assuming thunderbolt 3/4?

@alexanderadam @chipiguay
Thinkpad x1 Carbon, gen 13
- Intel Core i7-1365U
- integrated Iris Xe GraphicsSonnettech eGPU 750 (700? they might not sell this model anymore)
- Saphire Radeon RX 7800 XT gpucc @corycarson

@jenniferplusplus @alexanderadam @chipiguay Cross-vendor GPU hot plug works in Fedora?!
That is awesome. Driver support has come so far

@corycarson @alexanderadam @chipiguay Well, those two vendors do. I would have lower expectations with nvidia. And to be fair, my laptop doesn't *love* having part of its pci express bus just suddenly go missing.
But as long as it's not the primary gpu, it seems to work ok.
