Last year, I ran a small project in my community that was energizing.
I bought a bunch of disposable cameras and gave them to an org that works with the unhoused. They run many programs including arts activities so they found people who were interested in photography. I did a 1h class on photography but found that everyone has a great eye and interest already. I developed the film and we exhibited it.
-
Now I’m thinking about ways to expand the program or make it more consistent.
I may want to try to do a weekly drop-in thing at the local library.
Now more than ever, I find that forging bonds and helping out locally in my community is what feels right.
Don’t know what form it will take yet, but if you’re interested in collaborating it could be fun.

Through their photos that week, I got to see the lived experience of the people that many housed people simply dismissed as ‘poor’.
One man made wonderfully artistic architectural photos: here is the ‘bed’ I sleep on, on the street. Here is the fan I look at on the days I’m in the shelter.
A woman made a tremendously powerful series of photos about all of the political protests she attended.
Someone else loved nature, and her photos reflected an intimate connection with nature and wildlife
-
This, and the other small thing I do (whenever I’m baking bread I simply bake double and give away the second loaf or bag to someone on my street) are things that feel right to me. I don’t have the spoons to enact massive change, but small, local change even if it’s just feeding one person at a time, feels doable.

Sounds great!
Photography was a huge part of my recovery as it got me outside my head and focus on what’s around me. It helped make the ordinary extraordinary.
Using smartphones, I run a weekly group called PhotoVision, where participants share their photographs on a big screen and give strength-based critiques.
It’s literally eye opening!
