And last, from @sam, a question about cycle classes:
-
@SRLevine @ascentale @sam @autumn Agree on handlebar tapes! I've done it myself once, but I did such a horrible job, I've never made another attempt. I'd love to be able to do it, though.
-
Sadly, first I want to find a local DIY bike co-op!
regular maintenance - adjust dérailleur/brake cables, true a wheel, clean and lubricate everything, &c.
adjust the cockpit of the bicycle you have, and what would fit better next time.
Customization: sessions around differing bike use goals - commuter mods, lighter/faster road, brooting a tour bike, best MTB for local trails, bmx & trick, etc.
Because cycling evolves, I need refreshers.
-
A8 ctd:
New tech classes were sales pitches, and dominated the sched at the last bike co-op.
But one new tech per schedule would be nice. Belt drives, regenerative braking, current flatless tires… but not solely one brand, and please - have members give it, not a sales rep.
-
@daihard @SRLevine @ascentale @autumn bar wrapping is a good one! It's so finicky that a lot of people just give up on it, but it's actually pretty easy when you know how. I feel like people either hate it, or love it. I find it really relaxing and am pretty much always proud when I've done a good job, much more so than most other repairs for whatever reason.
-
@agnes nope, sorry, that is an advanced class!
Jokes aside, I *love* the idea of a class themed around this. I kind of wonder if I could rig up some props to make common noises somehow. Spoke ping, an actual bottom bracket creak (even though it's never actually the bottom bracket even though that's the most common noise people complain about), headset creak, and misaligned brake squeal all come to mind.
Thanks!
-
@cmgrowell @ai6yr @MartyCormack @ascentale I'm actually very finicky about this; everyone else at the local bike co-op teaches the "spin the cranks and spray" method, but I tend to tell people how to apply a single drop to each pivot point on the chain; we've had some arguments about it
-
@meganL @ascentale I love these ideas! I don't think I'm qualified to teach actual riding, but I kind of like the idea of doing this more often, so maybe it's something I should study up on.
For e-bike stuff I don't know if that's worth a full course or just a pamphlet, but people *definitely* need to know it if they're getting an e-bike. Great ideas, thanks!
-
@daihard @ascentale those videos have probably cut and put both in a de-greaser bath; if there's a way to get them super clean on the bike, I haven't found it either
-
@amgine @ascentale I'm sorry to hear that; doesn't sound like a proper bike co-op if they've got sales reps coming in and pitching stuff to you
-
@sam @daihard @ascentale some of those videos showed off the use of ultrasonic agitators, and I find that a tempting prospect if I could figure out where I would store the dang thing.
-
@SnoopJ @daihard @ascentale oh yah, those things are the best, but also *expensive*. I'd really like to get one for my shop one day, when I was working for someone else we had one in the shop and they make things incredibly easy.
-
@ascentale @sam as a parent I would love a class for KIDS for road safety. The only bike classes I can find anywhere around me (San Jose CA) are all mountain biking. Which holds zero interest to me and not much to my son. I learned to ride in the Midwest (and haven’t ridden a bike in decades) so need to get a bike for myself and my son but it almost certainly won’t be for mountain bike riding as I have behind zero interest in going fast or in going down (or up) hills as that’s my worst nightmare
-
@ai6yr It isn't the cleaning and repacking that is the problem. It is adjusting the cones afterwards. Or maybe that's just me, but I can never seem to get it right.
-
@etp @ai6yr @ascentale that one's definitely pretty common at the local co-op where I volunteer sometime. The biggest issues I see are way too much or way too little grease, and improperly adjusted cones.
-
@ascentale @sam A8: Learning how to ride & trying out different kinds of cycles — fixed, tandem, recumbent, unicycle, etc. #BikeNite
-
@rowmyboat @ascentale I still desperately want to find a unicycle and learn to ride it. One day…
