This presidential election is a test of Americans’ commitment to America’s Democracy, the Constitution, and the Rule of Law. It is so because the former president and the Republican Party have shamefully made it so."

"The often lofty, at times even noble, policy differences that have been the hallmark of American Politics and partisan debate for almost a quarter of a millennium pale in comparison to the foundational national policy issues of America’s Democracy, Constitution, and Rule of Law."

"J Michael Luttig has never endorsed a Democrat before. That’s no surprise since the well-respected legal scholar – a retired federal appeals court judge – leans well right of center. …
In an interview with CNN, which first reported his endorsement, Luttig explained that arriving at his decision to back Harris wasn’t complicated."

What matters to Michael Luttig is getting past January 2025 with democracy intact. We can argue later about how to govern

"He described it as a simple matter of knowing right from wrong – not merely right from left.
Simple? Maybe so, but also admirable. And at this singular moment for US democracy, all too rare."

@dom Where have I used just her given name? I'm not aware I've done that in anything I've posted myself. If you can point me to such a posting, I'll correct it. I make a point of always calling her by her full name.

"Faith abounds at the Democratic National Convention, but don’t be surprised. Trump staffers have called the left ‘godless,’ but this year’s DNC painted a very different picture."
Jack Jenkins cites Sen. Raphael Warnock:
“I think it’s important, particularly for those of us in the Democratic Party, to be full-throated in the ways our faith informs our values. We’ve got to be full-throated in resisting this idea of Christian nationalism.”

"The right is clearly worried about the power of the Obamas to tip the battle for the White House in favor of the Democrats. Over on Fox, Jesse Watters, who believes Barack Obama is the OG destroyer of the GOP, even demanded a new investigation into Obama’s birth certificate, which is about as appalling and desperate a move as I can imagine.
Sorry, Jesse. It’s going to take more than your whining to take down these dragons."

"It is this very aversion to politics—when combined with a recognition that political activism is necessary—that explains what makes Michelle Obama such a compelling speaker. She can reach ordinary people who aren’t political junkies or hard-core partisans because she has the same outsider perspective as they do."

/25The Presidency Is a "Black Job" - emptywheel
In the month since Joe Biden endorsed Kamala Harris to be the nominee to replace him, the concerns that America is not ready to elect a Black woman President have largely been silenced. And then Michelle Obama declared the Presidency "a Black job."

@wdlindsy Wonder how many run of the mill Americans might come to their senses if they weren’t constantly fed crazy pills by the likes of Watters, etc?

"When people said the US was not ready for the first Black woman president, [I responded] that with Dobbs on the ballot, with fascism on the ballot, after several elections in which Black women voters saved the country, a Black woman candidate may be the most logical choice. ...
Being bested by a smart, beautiful Black woman may be precisely the Kryptonite to Trump’s power the country has been looking for."

Yes. This is why I laugh every time someone suggests Michelle Obama for president. There is nothing that would induce her to do that. She has no patience for the bullshit and horse trading and compromise. That was Barack’s dream, and their different personalities are what makes them a great team. -
@wdlindsy well said

I appreciate the Obamas in some ways, but this is pure propaganda and is utter bullshit. The Soviet Union made the same promise.
"if you work and scrape and sacrifice, it will pay off. If not for you, then maybe for your children or your grandchildren.”

@Greengordon I’m not sure what specifically strikes you as akin to Soviet propaganda. If it’s the statements you highlight in your comments, I’d point out that people who inhabit the margins of society often typically tend to believe in the importance of hard work & fighting to get ahead, with the thought that they’re doing this on behalf of their children. M. Obama makes clear that’s where she’s coming from as she makes these statements, reflecting her experience as a black woman

@lucybeahere Yes, that’s my response, too, when I hear people dream of her riding for office. Her skepticism about politics is one of the things that makes me really value her. All the while that her husband seemed to play games before he could come to supporting LGBTQ rights wholeheartedly, I always had the impression she began from a baseline of support, and that the political gameplaying, which may be necessary in that arena, was distasteful to her.
