#WordWeavers 8 Jan: How do you create characters who have depth?

So many good answers.

For me, my characters just have this depth already. They appear on the page and are fully fleshed out personalities. I have to write them to know them better but I very rarely have to think about it. They are just "there" and do what they do because they are how they are.

I wish I could tell you more because I received a lot of wonderful comments about my characters but it nearly feels like undeserved praise.

Perhaps they have this depth because I love them?

My recipe for a good protagonist: 3 things I wish were true about me; 5 things I'm proud are true; and 7 things I'm embarrassed are true. Make up everything else.
