Today’s actions by @photomatt will make it much more difficult to recommend WordPress to customers in the future.
The message says, ”If you want to experience WordPress, use any other host in the world besides WP Engine.”
That might be great advice for today, but what about two years from now? What guarantee do we have that at WordCamp 2026 that @photomatt won't get pissed at some other sponsor and cut off access to WordPress.org?
-
Are we or our clients supposed to monitor the contributions to the WordPress community so we can pick a safe host that is less likely to upset @photomatt?
Our clients have plenty of things to worry about without wondering if their website host is going to run afoul of Matt’s expectations for hosting providers.
-
And to be clear, @photomatt’s expectations of WP Engine, or any other hosting provider or sponsor, could be 100% correct and the actions today would still present a large enough risk that it will give me pause when talking to future clients.
It seems like the only way to be safe would be use to WordPress.com hosting which beyond the obvious anti-competitive behavior, would also mean using a hosting provider that I haven't enjoyed working with in the past.
-
Anyways, all I can say is that @photomatt, you're screwing a lot of people beyond WP Engine.
If you want to fight with WP Engine, go ahead. It’s your prerogative.
But actively hurting WordPress users just because at some point in the past they picked a hosting provider you no longer like is shitty.

One final point on this topic. One of our customers using WordPress on WP Engine is a manufacturer of generators.
Every hand at the company is on deck right now to help people impacted by the hurricane that is supposed to hit Florida tomorrow.
The last thing they need is additional barriers in the way of helping people who may be in harms way. So @photomatt, your petty actions could literally end up putting someone's life in danger.
Grow up.
