Finland is in a weird spot regarding piracy, if you decide to torrent something in Finland without a VPN and that torrent happens to have a tracker by this law company called Hedman partners you are going to get in the mail a blackmail letter which (not verbatim) says “Give us 600 euros or we file a civil suit.” [https://www.saitkokirjeen.fi], it’s a mass surveillance company disguised (1/4)

as a law company trying to “do the right thing” and get copyright owners what they’re owned, in reality what they’re doing is mass surveillance BY DEFINITION. Okay so you may say “how the hell do they know where to send the letter to?” they know your IP address, and they look up what ISP you have it on, if it’s Elisa,Telia,DNA, the 3 big Internet Service Providers in Finland, they are likely to give out your address to a company solely based on an IP address given by a company. Incase you didn’t notice, this isn’t how a subpoena works. A private individual/corporation cannot subpoena another company to give out an address for a civil suit. (A civil suit which is never filed) And which can be said is a HUGE PRIVACY VIOLATION can you imagine doing something in the comfort of your own machine and receiving a letter from a private corporation threatening a civil suit. This is, in every way a gross privacy violation, what can we do about it? (3/4)

Okay so how does GDPR fit into this, first, finnish citizens are without consent being tracked in a database, GDPR requires explicit consent to be given for the personal data collection (IP,address) AND for the automated decision making, consent is not given. ISPs violate the consumer’s privacy by giving out personal information to a company without a subpoena for a civil suit, which is a violation of privacy. We need to bring this to an EU court of law and fine the shit out of them. (4/4)
