I think a lot of people have seen the images and videos of the worst flooding in the North Carolina mountains, and surrounding regions. Here's a bit of what it looks like all over the region, away from rivers and mudslides.

There are six homes on our small spur road. Two of those were blocked by downed trees. They weren't just single trees, they were groups of trees. I watched trees fall in real time for the first time in my life.

In this case, there were no power lines involved. So I joined two other neighbors with chainsaws and a tractor and cleared a path through the driveway.
These were healthy trees; the soil just got so saturated that trees started falling. We had to pause at one point and wait for another tree to fall just downslope of this driveway.

@ehmatthes, I hope you all recover quickly after the recent flooding and ICU stint. I've seen the pictures and assume it's worse in real life, but even the photos are scary.

@mahryekuh Thank you Marijke! I'm so beyond grateful that the medical stuff happened before the storm. I can't really think about how it would have played out if that happened one week later.
