What is the least objectionable content delivery network (CDN) for a fully static website?
-
@matt why do you really need a CDN here? That's important for, like, Netflix, not really for static content
-
@matt shaving 10ms off of latency for a 200K page isn't really that important
-
@drewdevault Isn't it more like hundreds of milliseconds depending on how far the visitor is from the single server?
-
@matt who cares? It could take a full three seconds to load and be fine
-
@drewdevault I guess it doesn't really matter for my little open-source project site. But then again, by hosting only in North America, I'd be giving preferential treatment to those in or near North America, right? Shouldn't we care about doing what we can to treat everyone equally?
-
@drewdevault And, come to think of it, why *should* 3 seconds be acceptable, with computers and (some) Internet connections being as fast as they are?
-
@matt I think we should focus on areas of higher impact. If the website was heavier I might agree with you, but for this site it's perfectly fine. Most important qualities for equitable access has much less to do with latency and more to do with computational cost, energy use (draining old batteries with JS), etc
-
@drewdevault *checks to make sure the static site's theme doesn't do anything egregious in computational or bandwidth cost*
-
@matt it's fine because you're making 2 or 3 requests max, in parallel. It's more problematic on complex websites where that latency stacks up fast on a bunch of requests happening in serial. There are downsides to CDNs, too, especially with respect to privacy
-
@matt if you want to spend some time improving this website the typography is distracting and awful (for a sighted user, maybe it works well for you?)
-
@drewdevault Good to know, thanks. Both of us who worked on the site have low vision.
-
@matt not sure if it's supposed to look like this (or if a screenshot is illustrative for you)
-
@matt email me about it and I'll send you some patches when I can spare some time, maybe on my train monday
