About my last boost from @drewdevault, this makes me ashamed to consider myself part of the Rust community, especially since some of the comments he quoted in the thread were posted in places where the Rust code of conduct are allegedly in force (that is, it's not just Reddit and Hacker News). We've got a problem with tribalism in our community. I know it's not up to me to police the community, but still, what can we do about this?
-
@matt I think what I would want is a public apology from the moderators and leaders of the Rust community for creating an environment where this toxicity is enabled, an acknowledgement of the problem and a call for the community to do better, for the moderators to crack down on this stuff, for community members to call this behavior out when it happens, and for my arguments to be received in good faith.
-
@matt At the same time I understand that the community is riled up and grieving a major burnout and that's not about me. So whatever.
-
@drewdevault @matt Why would moderators of Rust communities censor users for critiquing a critique? Of course some of it is dismissive, ignorant, or made in bad faith. But it isn't mod's job to quality-gate Rust related content — your blog post wasn't gated either. Unless people are harassing you — it is an expected behavior of any community.
If you only ever critiqued the project, no matter the faith, you will not be taken seriously — that's a FOSS rule, basically.

@drewdevault @matt hmm, the CoC does indeed ban insults, demeaning, and harassment. I guess you do have all rights to complain about people ignoring your post just after seeing your name. IMHO, slight insults (dumb, idiot, etc) and demeaning (based off of your previous content, not discrimination) is not something that can be banned at scale for people in communities, so forcing it in CoC seems like an oversight — although it is necessary for more official gatherings.

@drewdevault @matt it all depends on scale. Even then, I would much rather participate in communities that can freely express liking and disliking people based on content they produce, rather then in gated communities. That, of course, depends on the type of place we talk about. Official Discourse is not a place for this, but I'd argue that Reddit is. But I'm being off topic now.

@drewdevault @matt I can see why you'd say that, and I can't disagree. I do want my freedom to be an asshole to people I think are assholes. Isn't that a necessity to protect your community? Ain't talking about Rust of course, but about nationality, LGBT, stuff like that. If someone starts critiquing LGBT in whatever faith, I think many would agree that people have all rights to be mad at that person, and express it.
