The Winamp source code has finally been published, and the license sucks as much as everyone feared:
* "Copyleft".
* Forking is prohibited.
* Sharing your modifications is prohibited.
* If you contribute upstream, you waive all rights and assign them to Winamp.That's not how copyleft is supposed to work.

@dHeinemann There's nothing like a copyleft there.
"Only the maintainers of the official repository are allowed to distribute the software and its modifications."
It's source-available, nonfree software.

@dHeinemann The comments on the issues in this repo are great.

@dcz Exactly, it isn't copyleft in any meaningful way. Yet, the license describes itself as "copyleft" in the Preamble:
"The Winamp Collaborative License is a free, copyleft license for software and other kinds of works".
I don't like the way it describes itself as "free" either.

@mikey_in_sd For sure! Ironically, it looks like the repo may have contained third-party code that was published without permission, but that seems to have been scrubbed now.
It's good to see the maintainers actively addressing issues, at least.

@dHeinemann while I agree that the licensing is incredibly poor, at the same time I wonder why one should care at all. Like does Winamp have anything going for it other than the nostalgia?
-
@alto Arguably, no. It really hasn't kept up with the times due to lack of maintenance over the years.
But it's an iconic program, and I hoped for more from the source code license.
