Democrats have a working class problem, and I don't mean "working class" in the sense of non-college white conservatives, many of whom are actual millionaires, which is what Republicans and all too often Democrats mean by the term.
-
I don't give a fuck about rural white conservatives. And I'm not sympathetic to non-whites and queer people who think they can buy a seat at the table with a Trump vote either.
But there are millions of people working "essential" and oftentimes shitty jobs for money that is worth less and less, some of whom have never seen a minimum wage increase in their lives, who don't have a union, and who got the rug yanked out from underneath them when COVID relief measures expired.
-
And it's nice that Biden forgave billions in student loans even against Republican opposition! Because a lot of working people who got college degrees hoping to make a better life for themselves and their families found out it was a scam and they were saddled with an essentially inescapable debt, which oftentimes offset any gains they might have made.
But it wasn't enough.
-
I am not particularly worried about the white liberal blue state union households and suburban professionals who own their homes and have investments either because they've done pretty well under Biden. They're often his most vocal supporters.
And I get why! But most members of their demographic vote Republican.
-
Republicans and the media like to beat Democrats over the head with "working class" voters because they want them to capitulate on social issues.
And why not? It often works! Democrats spent this entire campaign moving right and chasing white suburban Republicans who voted for Trump anyway.
But there are millions of actual poor and working people in this country who were or could be reliable Democratic voters.
-
Democrats lost millions of votes when they decided it was okay that the wealth of this country was consolidated among the top 10%, who are mostly old, white, and conservative, and especially to the top 0.01% who are their billionaire donors and patrons, and the rest of us just needed to suck it up and work harder and stop whining about "inflation."
-
And that's just ONE of many mistakes Democrats made.
One of many choices.
-
It was a policy choice to ignore the housing crisis and make fun of renters and then have motherfuckers like Gavin Newsom turn around and criminalize homelessness.
-
"Housing as an asset and investment isn't the problem. We make a lot of money from that. We just need to incentivize more luxury housing and affordable homes will trickle down from there.
In the meantime, we'd better not catch you sleeping in your car. Vote blue!"
-
@gwynnion I was about to ask if this was quoting Gavin Newsom, then saw the thread post history.
