how decentralised is the fediverse really?
or, let's take the chat network we call "Mastodon" (and call *oma and *key part of that)
how operationally decentralised is it?
i have a rule of thumb that decentralisation is always fake, there's a control structure whether clear or obfuscated
but as far as I can tell the Mastodon-ish network is ... pretty decentralised?
even the huge anchor servers like mastodon.social aren't a dependency. there's coders to keep the software going if Gargron and m.s ascended bodily to heaven tomorrow.
one thing that *is* rather too concentrated is hosting. Hetzner and OVH are cheap, so a vast number of servers live there.
otoh a new server is a PITA but not a firm control.
so - are there other centralisations i've missed?
