Wanting to die is a little 2019, isn't it?

Your world and the world of a few million affluent Americans and those in the western world just got inconvenienced with the election of an orange idiot .... it doesn't mean the world got worse ... it was always bad for the majority of everyone else outside the western world and for the poor living in the western world.
As shitty as it is ... I'd rather live in this timeline dealing with an orange skinned orangutan then to live in a post apocalyptic wasteland (chances are we probably wouldn't even exist and even if we did, we probably wouldn't want to)
In this timeline we have a chance at fighting back against oppression ... in the timeline you imagine, everything and everyone is destroyed.

It's eternal. Now and forever.

Oh, I think you misunderstand the assignment. This isn't presenting the idea of living in the current timeline vs living in post atomic wasteland.
This is living in the current timeline vs extinction of all of earth decades before you were even born.

"[...] lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches. Many were increasingly of the opinion that they'd all made a big mistake coming down from the trees in the first place, and some said that even the trees had been a bad move, and that no-one should ever have left the oceans."

If you don't want to deal with life then you can just end it for yourself. No need to take the rest of the humanity with you.
