Few things piss me off more than software removing options because it'll confuse users. Just hide them away in an advanced options submenu. Hell, even put up a warning that messing with em isn't supported, or let me modify a config file, but leave them in there somehow.

"Oh, and the attachments have all been sleekified as well, so things like strain reliefs on the plugs have all been removed. Get ready to buy new attachments every ten months for no good reason."

They remove (relatively) unused options because it takes time and money to maintain them and they're always a source of potential bug reports. My least favorite example of this is all my music apps getting rid of list views (text-based rows where you can see 15-20 options on the screen at a time) in favor of thumbnail views where you only see a couple of options at a time.

There are certain things I don't really mind being add-ons.
That one Motorola (I think?) smartphone a while back that had actual camera lenses you could swap out like an SLR sounded pretty dope. I've read a general science and technology thing once that talked about tools for scientific research as just things you can plug into a smartphone for the power, and software side of things to do various kinds of scans (mostly medical stuff) that is as close to a real world tricorder we might have right now.
But needing an adapter to use a wired headphone or something instead of just having a god damn 3.5mm port or things of similar nature can go to hell.

I wish I had a 3D printer when that thing was still relevant. Most of the attachments were literally just plastic shells to hold the controller and give you more tactile ways of playing. Like a golf club for golf or a steering wheel for racing games.

I'm fucked up.. need a new phone.. really don't want to lose my 3.5mm jack. Big music guy, have nice head phones that don't run out of battery. During band practice it's nice being able to plug into the speakers we have for playback.
Not even sure what's still viable for an upgrade... Hate the idea of getting a fucking dongle. ΰ² β οΈ΅β ΰ²

how is it easier to maintain a list of thumbnails than a text list?

Its not, its probably relatively the same once the app is all slapped together. What's harder is maintaining both instead of just the popular one.

This also applies to software. "we've clean up our UI and stuffed every tool you use every day into menus and submenus! Now all your favourite tools are 1-2 extra clicks away. But look at all this white space!"
Most recent ofender was JIRA.

GSMArena.com has a searcheable database of phones both old and new. One can filter for 3.5mm jacks.
