My maybe unpopular opinion is that a closely contested election doesn't automatically equal a deeply divided electorate. Just something to keep in mind in the days ahead

@akurjata and can the electorate truly be called “deeply divided” if we don’t actually know the opinion of 43% of them?

@chris yeah, that's the thing. A huge chunk can't even be fussed to vote. And of those who do, I'm not sure we should assume they test their political identity as some deeply held thing that signifies irreconcilable disagreement with those who vote in other ways

@akurjata I saw a few people on the doorstep who were simply disillusioned with everything. It wasn’t that they didn’t care, they just thought, strongly, that they didn’t want any part of it. Those ones made me the most sad.

@fifilamoura @akurjata absolutely. And as we were reminded by our PM, Russian and other non-democratic state strategies as well.

@fifilamoura @chris @akurjata not just the normies; to get anyone who isn’t on board to give up. This is why you see targeted right wing messaging at particular marginalized groups - racialized communities, religious organizations, even queer folks - trying to persuade them to stay home and stand aside.
And it works. “I can’t support the non-right wing party; they once did something I didn’t like.”
