Just encountered a real, honest to goodness twitter hashbang link in the wild. Unsurprisingly modern twitter’s webapp has no idea how to resolve them anymore.
-
@misty wait, what were hashbangs?
-
@archenoth Twitter launched its first single-page app in 2011, and back then most web browsers didn't support rewriting URLs without causing the browser to actually do new fetches. So Twitter changed its URL structure, sticking a #! (the hashbang) between the domain and all routes, to ensure that all routes resolved client-side. Twitter links looked something like twitter.com/#!/horse_ebooks instead of twitter.com/horse_ebooks.

@[email protected] @[email protected] holy fucking cursed, I... jesus. what horrors have we spawned from? I'm so glad I missed all of this. This is deeply, deeply cursed.
-
@[email protected] @[email protected] but also
The transform between last week’s LifeHacker URL scheme, and this week’s hash-bang mangling
please tell me that the action of mangling a link via a hash-bang was "hash-bangling" -
@aud @archenoth It *should* have been!!
-
@[email protected] @[email protected] totally unrelated but now I want to start an all synth/electronic cover band of the Bangles called the "Hash-Bangles"
-
@aud @misty @archenoth This is amazingly cursed. I don't know how I missed all of this. I was deep in the weeds with webdev back then.
-
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] right? like this some genuinely eldritch invocation shit. like literally.

@aeva @aud @archenoth Honestly doesn't seem like the worst thing to have missed if you already had enough cursed stuff to be thinking about
-
@misty @aud @archenoth I probably would have gained some satisfaction from being mad about it and having an unnecessary opinion on it to share to anyone polite enough to listen
-
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] To be fair, I don't think there's anything stopping either of us from that right now because I feel pretty good about calling it cursed.
-
@aud @misty @archenoth oh for sure, but it feels quaint more than anything now. just a little bit of nostalgic fun before I go back to plowing unreal engine for a few more hours
-
@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] a world where time travel is possible but is only used by people to go back in time and make arguments to feel the thrill of being seen as correct
-
@aud @misty @archenoth "no I'm not making a slippery slope argument. let me tell you about something from my time period called React"
