I am in awe of the industrial design of the PlayStation 5, a device that cannot stand on its own either vertically or horizontally. If you want to stand it up vertically, you need a $20 stand. If you want to lay it on its side, you have to insert two chintzy little plastic feet into it to keep it from constantly tipping over. Just a masterclass in how not to design a physical object

"Talking to the lead designer of the PS5, Yujin Morisawa, it’s clear that Sony’s approach to the next generation of console gaming may be the antithesis of Microsoft’s, but it is just as considered. In our 30-minute conversation, Morisawa reveals he was trained as a college student in the Bauhaus style beloved by Rams zealots. But he’s more philosophical than pragmatic, and aspirational than practical."

I wish I had the kind of gig where I could say "well no, it doesn't WORK, but in not working it makes an important statement"

The Fast Company article helpfully points out another Sony product Morisawa designed, 2007's Sony Rolly, an MP3 player.
THIS THING WAS AN MP3 PLAYER

Now I'm wondering how much it would cost to get stickers printed up that say DON NORMAN HAS A POSSE

@jalefkowit it’s cute!

@tommysolomon I don't believe that form necessarily has to follow function. But they should both at least reside in the same time zone

@jalefkowit Also I can NEVER get the thing that helps it stand horizontally to go on properly and can't ever tell if I did it right.

@danhon There’s no reason it couldn’t be a nice little metal foot that swings flush with the housing when it’s not in use. But nope, here’s four cents worth of plastic and oh by the way you get to install it yourself

@jalefkowit @0x0ddc0ffee What the heck? Did they stop including the vertical stand? Those came with it 13-14 months ago.
(I don't disagree with the overarching critique of the PS5's physical properties, however.)

@jima @0x0ddc0ffee They dropped the vertical stand with the "PS5 Slim" redesign. You now have to buy it separately.
