One thing I think really revealing about the Fediverse is it actually offers true free speech as anybody can run a server..
..but Elon Musk spunked billions on Twitter, where he complies with Turkish government access blah blah..
And Donald Trump spent millions on Truth Social, which runs Mastodon under the hood with federation disabled.
Maybe it isn’t about free speech for them. Maybe it’s about controlling who can speak, how far people reach, and influencing outcomes of their speech.

@GossiTheDog "Anyone can run a server", while true, asks a lot of a person with other priorities in their life. There are also a lot of petty tyrants running and modding servers, so if you don't have the spoons to run your own, you can end up hopping around a lot dodging assholes.

@CatDad @GossiTheDog the anyone in this case is anyone who wants to take on the commitment time and cost to run a mastodon instance. Exactly the same as anyone can run a forum.
Part of that requires knowing how to do the stuff. Same as anyone can start a publishing company but they still need to know how to print and distribute books.
The anyone doesn't mean any random person without those skills. That's why commercial social media took over. Easy. At a price. Anyone can join.

@GossiTheDog Anybody can run a server, but if you are going to get hundreds of thousands of blind followers logging on, and will be promoting the server in other media, it will cost millions. And as someone else says here, if you don't have the spoons to do it yourself, others will charge.

@GossiTheDog do you really think Truth Social would be federated with any other mid or big size fediverse instance if they had left federation enabled? Do you think any other fediverse instance with similar politic view would keep federated with other known instances? I've seen people here actively promoting cancel culture against individual accounts (promoting mass blocks), which I don't think is free speech

instances are also perfectly happy to federate with one another. No idea why Truth.social didn't go that route - maybe it's about control or
