Can't remember if I had that issue on the latest Mastodon version running on mastodon.social.
Annoying, alt-text is cool, but it will improve eventually.

@johnefrancis is this different in 4.3? Weβll get to the latest 4.2 release soon, but 4.3 will need a bit of work.
-
@mick I'm not sure...I definitely notice a few 4.2isms here. I think mastodon.social was already at 4.4 when I left.
What's the work to upgrade to 4.3? Deep tissue massaging of the DB so it doesn't blow up? I went along thru the upgrades pretty easy with cats.mastodon.musk.sucks, but with basically no users, data, or risk, it's not the same as a for-real upgrade.

@johnefrancis there are some underlying libraries that need to be updated and arenβt available in the core release channel to the vintage of Ubuntu weβre running on.
Iβm hoping to take the opportunity to upgrade the underlying OS as part of the rollout (though I might just patch it if I canβt find the time)
-
@mick yeah, I think I encountered that too. Some grief with Debian/Ubuntu dropping the older version of python.
-
@johnefrancis Hey it sounds like you know what you're doing with this software. Would you be interested in helping out around here on the TechOps side?
-
@mick I can't commit to it at the moment, the pattern is full. But maybe in the future.
-
@johnefrancis sounds good. Let me know if you have any questions or ideas about how things are run here.
And shout at me when I say something obviously wrong about Mastodon in public.
-
@mick OK...
VMs or Docker/Kubernetes? -
@johnefrancis running a droplet from Digital Ocean, everything run from Systemd at the moment. Headed towards Docker but pretty ignorant of it tbh.
-
@johnefrancis should say: no k8s. We decided to avoid it until we have enough knowledgeable people to help support it.

@johnefrancis What mobile app are you using? Phanpy shows alt text on mobile just fine.
-
@timbray @johnefrancis On the suspicion that he's using the web interface: tap the image to enlarge, then push and hold the image and you'll see the Alt text at the top of the menu. I think you can tap the text to see it all if it's truncated.

@johnefrancis @mhkohne I do strongly suggest trying one or more of the alternate user interfaces. I personally am huge on phanpy.social it's both web and (via PWA) a nice client on mobile.
