"There's more to democracy than elections."

@evan Strongly agree.
But also we frequently confuse "democracy" with "liberal democracy". A society can be liberal without being democratic, and a society can be democratic without being liberal.

@evan Voting is a minimal, not ultimate, form of citizen engagement.

I've been thinking about this topic since the US election. One of the big talking points for the Democratic Party was that Donald Trump and the Republicans were dangerous to democracy. On Tuesday, they won a pretty decisive majority of the Presidential votes and the Senate. (The House is still not called.) So, how can the party and candidates that receive the most votes be a danger to democracy? Electing our leaders is a big part of democracy.

But there are other parts of democracy that we don't always consider part of the mix: equality before the law. Universal human rights. A fair electoral process. All the things that make voting worth doing.

Many autocratic governments have run elections throughout history -- sometimes with laughably high turnout and electoral margins. Elections are necessary but not sufficient. For functioning democracy, we need a lot more.
