The Fediverse is part of the solution to the polycrisis.

WTF is a polycrisis? Another techno-nerd thing? Aren’t there any real, like flesh & blood, problems to work on?
And THAT IS A RHETORICAL QUESTION BOY!
-
@evan Qualified yes, because I don't know what the Polycrisis means.

@evan Qualified no, borderline maybe. It might solve some things! Having an open way to cross-communicate from anywhere definitely could help in subverting censorship or suppression of information.
However, the question of “can technology solve human problems?” sometimes gives me pause. It can definitely make a lot of things less bad, but I’m not entirely sure it can be used to stop a thermonuclear war from happening, once underway. It can work around things like natural disasters, but can’t prevent most of them.
Widespread mass poverty and regional destabilization, though, I’m not sure it can do much unless mutual aid networks can be established. Even then, it takes a backseat to things like working phones and radio comms.

@evan Qualified yes. We need good info from real humans to tackle the polycrisis, and this network has the potential to be the best at tackling disinformation and AI slop, at connecting people directly without algorithms or "pay to reach your followers" extortion getting in the way. (Hasn't fully reached its potential yet tho.)
However, the Fediverse as currently implemented is resource-hungry, and if scaled up has the potential to increase emissions, water use etc., to be part of the problem.

@evan Not as it is now.
-
@evan polywhat?

I'm a strong yes. If we do this right, we can be part of the solution.
