@erincandescent @vyr more seriously actually, thinking about user archetypes, I wonder how many people on fedi…. post. like, what fraction of users posts regularly. Traditionally that number isn’t actually very high on social networks, right? Tons of people who only read posts, *maybe* sometimes reply. So you’d want to see the percent of people with discovery on versus that.
(Then again, my feeling is and has been that it’ll be higher here than on, say, twitter, because everything seems so much more by and for people who treat social media as Big Chatroom rather than News Aggregator)

@gabboman i've heard it on here as "Big Fedi vs. Small Fedi" (i think that phrase first came from @evan but if not i don't know where he got it)
this would be the per-user version. a UX challenge for instance server or even client devs.

@erincandescent @vyr @halcy this is so terrible lol
this is objectively the worst, but I love it in its terror
it’s a real Robespierre of a proposal.

@vyr yeah 100%, defaults matter so incredible much, and design should factor in the assumptions that most people wont change any default settings about anything

@vyr TBH.. that's actually kind of the perfect pitch.

@shlee i've used, built, and/or sketched out enough Fedi user preferences pages to know that is too many knobs. so begin with one big switch that you have to pick an option on, get people started off right for what they're intending with their account

@vyr the two modes
Normal, and isolated and weird.
(this is legitimately a great idea because there are plenty of people actively fighting/resisting that the default should be one or the other)
