@evan A lot of it is still word of mouth or a matter of subscribing to mailing lists. Partly because of lack of a clear aggregation and partly because there are so many of them, especially when you consider regional or very specialized focused ones.

@JamesDBartlett3 yes!

@nemobis @evan Yup – pretalx is doing the CfP and scheduling part (including reviewing, speaker comms, and generally everything that would be a pain to do in a spreadsheet).
We're not really doing discoverability, because pretalx can be self-hosted, so there are hundreds of instances around. Because there are so many platforms, and that's surely a good thing!, having the schedule and the discoverability be discrete things is probably a good thing tbh.

@evan can I interest you int he topic of contributing to open source software?
For real though: federation is hugely complex to build well and in a way that degrades gracefully and is intuitive to the user. Taking all that on, as a solo developer, while also building out pretalx, would probably do the project a disservice.
Pretalx *does* have a plugin API though, so a federation plugin would be totally possible!

@pretalx you can interest me in that! A quick Web search will find a lot of my work. I also have a book coming out from O'Reilly Media about ActivityPub, including a section on events:
ActivityPub
ActivityPub is the new standard for connecting social networks together on the social web. This open, decentralized social networking protocol defines an API for sharing activities to a social network … - Selection from ActivityPub [Book]

@pretalx if you're really thinking about connecting installations, you could do worse than using AP. Let me know if you're interested and I can help.
