@evan there are sooo many factors! Ex:
drugs for physical issues (for ex: antihistamines) can suppress or enhance dreaming.
Chronic pain has an effect on depth of sleep
… *and* on general mental health (I experienced free-floating anxiety from un-medicated chronic pain, which can show up in dreams).
even digestive trouble affects dreaming
And, of course, psychiatric drugs can change the sleep-scape. -

I'm qualified yes. As fast as I've read, there are connections, but not nearly so much as in the popular imagination. This is a reasonable but not comprehensive discussion:
