#astrophotography folks on #askFedi — can you actually do astro photography from say your balcony if you live in a big city with light pollution? i am in #toronto and i want to confirm this because some youtube dudes say it is possible. i always assumed one needs dark skies.

@amanjeev yes, but it makes it really hard as you need more integration time

@thomasfuchs because of filters that one has to use to avoid light pollution?

@amanjeev no—light pollution adds a certain amount of photons per time unit, which in the end amounts to much quicker overexposure (well depth of sensor), which in turn means shorter maximum exposure times, which then means you get more noise because you will have more exposures.
Light pollution filters help but don’t make the problem go away.
It’s totally possible to get great photos tho, but you’ll need to invest more time.

@thomasfuchs There's probably digital filtering techniques to reduce the general light pollution noise. I don't see a way to do it in conventional chemical photography.
