it's the social layer for the open web so it should be as big as the internet. displace all the corporate platforms, but there should also be lots of private groups (possibly using fedi ids) #SocialWeb

@PaulaToThePeople Too small, because I want many more people to be empowered by federated social media.
Just right, because the community here is great, and doesn't need anything else to be healthy and fun.

@nth_project I feel the same way. And also too big, as a lot of marginalized people are no longer as safe as they were, before some of the big waves.

@cy My mom is very centralized though.

The Fediverse always has been (and will be, for the forseeable) just right.
When I first started using Mastodon back in 2017, it often felt too small, in terms of users interested in some of my niche interests (like this account), but was otherwise a warm and friendly place.
Now, although it occasionally feels a bit too big, it still remains a generally warm and friendly place, with most niche interests represented.
Certain parts of the Fediverse have Nazi problem, which means playing constant games of Whack-A-Mole with the block button, which I think most of us would prefer not to have, but being on an instance with an active (possibly pro-active) mod team helps most people with this.

@mancavgeek @reedmideke True.
I'd say with good moderation on your own instance, rather than the Fediverse being too big, there are just a few instances, that are way too big (bad apples so to say), like mastodon.social.
They give moderators nightmares. -

Yeah, moderation is key - but my point about Fedi feeling too big is when another Magat/GOPer/out-and-our-Nazi instance (or, green in the UK, another Brexiter/Kipper/ToryScum/TommyRobinson-loving instance) infillitrates our feeds before anyone knows they are there, it takes a while to block them all.
On average, we do a far better job of moderation here on Fedi than the corporate social media silos ever did, but it still takes work. -

@mancavgeek @reedmideke Yeah, definitely.
