A boost means:
My followers should see this.

I personally never only boost, but always star+boost.

Contrary to what the common line is, there are algorithms in the Fediverse. And stars do count towards Mastodons algorithm for trending posts.
The normal feeds however are algorithm-free, so if you don't check the trends or if your server disabled them completely, then only boosts by people you follow will bring posts by people you don't follow in your home timeline. Only other way is the post contains a hashtag you follow.

@anoux Oh and if I see a profile with lots of followers, but no boosts, only original posts, then I tend to think the owner of the profile is an egoist. But maybe that's just me.
