Living in France, the figure that concerns me the most in the European elections is not the 31.37% who voted for the fascist RN.
It's the 48.5% who abstained.
This is sometimes reported as "didn't vote", but that is incorrect.
Abstaining is voting.
Abstaining is voting with your middle finger.
Abstaining is an explicit endorsement of the worst possible outcome from an election.
So the true result is that 64.7% voted for fascists to represent #France in the #EU.
-
@dentangle what is voting blank then?
-
@dentangle I make it as 64.7% not 79.8%
48.5% abstained
of the 51.5% who voted, 31.37% voted Nazi.
That is (51.5% * 31.37%) = 16.2% (rounded to 1 decimal) of the people eligible to vote went and voted Nazi.
The two add to 48.5% + 16.2% = 64.7% -
@dentangle The fascists will ALWAYS turn out to vote. Partly because some of them come from older power structures.
People in the past had to fight for our human rights. They fought against the status quo, while some of our ancestors tut tutted at them upsetting the apple cart against "our betters".
So when we don't bother to vote, we are handing in those rights to the fascists. Who will take away those rights.
Look to the UK and Brexit. Look at where the UK is at.
-
@dentangle If folks aren't that sure if their votes matter, My dude, vote green. Or the left.
At least in France you're spoiled for choice.
-
@Uilebheist You are correct.
Oddly enough, that doesn't make me feel any better about the result.
-
@dentangle "Didn't vote" is these handful of people who, for example, have an accident on the way to the polling station and are unable to vote for that reason. I suppose one could have that as "couldn't vote" instead.
The remaining 48.5% who decided not to vote have of course made an explicit decision to accept the result.
They'll probably be the ones who complain loudest too. -
@Uilebheist Aye. I'll accept there are always a few ppl who can't vote for some reason, but 48.5% seems like a lot of CBA.
-
@necrophcodr "voting blank" or spoiling your ballot is like abstention in every way, except that you also waste some of your own time and other peoples to do so.
