you may not believe this, but back in 2018 (I was 14) I was such a huge fan of Elon Musk my sister gifted me this for my birthday. This was one year before moving to San Jose and meeting people who actually work for him, or experiencing his absolute meltdown over people not coming to work for following pandemic rules. I read his book and everything. All because of the PewDiePipeline

@[email protected] PewDiePipeline? What is that, what does it transport and where does it lead to?

@[email protected] @[email protected] I'm kinda lost, please bear with me:
1.) One enjoys some gaming channels on YouTube
2.) One of them is PewDiePie
3.) One enjoys PewDiePie's content
4.) One becomes fascist?
I'm not following. Is PewDiePie a fascist? I know he did some really screwed up stuff in the past, but I'm sure I would have read about him embracing fascism (like I read back in the day where he said the "n-word" on stream which led to the YouTube "Adpocalypse" if I remember correctly). -

@hannah @itsmeholland let me explain it this way: one day, I was simply watching Minecraft let's plays or meme reviews on YouTube by PewDiePie. From one moment to the next, PewDiePie would include a segment by a man named “Ben Shapiro” who would host the show for him for multiple minutes. I didn't know who this man was, I thought he was just a meme. I was not aware of the fact that he is a far right white supremacist.
Another day I was watching PewDiePie he'd be paying kids in some developing country to write “kill all jews” on a sign and loudly laugh when they actually do it for minimal amounts of money.
As a child, this sent me down a very dangerous path. I am very glad that I was never too deep into any far right bubbles. The media I so naively consumed was, however, full of far right thought content and little shout outs to far right figureheads such as this one. Simply “satire”... about the holocaust, huh. I think it's certainly one beginning of the pipeline and Innuendo Studios coined the term.
This is a good video by Hbomberguy on the topic of PewDiePie and the “kill all jews” incident specifically:

@[email protected] @[email protected] I know Innuendo Studio and (mostly) appreciate his informative videos, I did not know (or remember) this one though. I should (re-)watch that to make sure.
If I summarize what you wrote:
The issue is not that he is far-right itself but more that he "exposes" (for a lack of a better word) his (rather young) audience to these ideas. Is that a fair summary?
I used to watch him a bunch when I was young, but that was a very long time ago and by the time he "became controversial" I did not really watch him anymore and did not notice all the drama around that.
I never noticed a "far-right pipeline". Though that was arguably because I was very conservative at that time and that was in a period before my egg cracked :blobcat_dizzy: -

@hannah @itsmeholland yeah, I think you summarized it very well. I'd just find it weird to collaborate with Ben Shapiro, especially if you think yours “apolitical” (which isn't a thing)

@ErikUden @hannah @itsmeholland Far right people are very good in believing they're both "centrist" as well as "apolitical" because they equate their own opinion and perception to "common sense" and lack any education* on self-reflective and critical thinking.
*some might also need actual therapy for suppressed trauma.

@[email protected] @[email protected] Thank you for taking your time with that.
"Apolitical" is basically a dog-whistle these days to disguise the fact that you don't care that someone is a raging fascist (that happens quite often I'm afraid) or simply a very unpleasant person to be around with. And I never knew he really collaborated with Ben "I can't satisfy my wife" Shapiro.
Ben.
Shapiro.
My god, I really did become woke! I wonder what 18 year old me would think about me now :blobcat_dizzy: -

@hannah @ErikUden @itsmeholland Think of it the other way: Look at how far you've gotten! Congratulations! :yayblob:
