I’d like to know your thoughts. Do answer honestly and present factual information.
What reasons do potential users have for coming to the #fediverse #mastodon ?
Keep in mind we aren’t only discussing white users but people from all kinds of backgrounds and cultures. People that have strong reasons to remain on Big Social -
@damon I would say that the biggest reason is that you can have a shared space for your particular subcommunities with rules, moderation and content that reflect your values rather than those of some megacorp's advertisers.
For example, an instance for new mothers can explicitly allow pictures of breastfeeding mothers and 2 year olds in the bath in a way that Facebook never could. A LGBT+ or kink instance can let people openly discuss sexuality in ways that can and do get kicked off Twitter.

@Blort There was a sex worker friendly instance that got taken down. Pretty sure it was Switter. Also, people can do on Discord, Facebook groups, Reddit what you just stated

@damon I would recommend most people stay away if I'm being honest. It's way too easy for a small minority of people to make a lot of people's life a living hell here, and until that's addressed I don't see things getting much better.
Also, the fact that Mastodon continues to be thrown about as if it, and the fediverse, are one and the same, is nauseating. -
I've experienced thatyour Facebook group isn't allowed to have rules conflicting with Facebook's "community guidelines".
OTOH Switter shut down for political reasons, not because of monocultural rules imposed by advertisers as on centralized media.
A single centralized platform leans towards a single, central set of rules for everyone regardless of how well they fit different communities.
1000 small instances are also less likely to draw legislation/snooping than one centralized one.

@gme Agreed. People claim it’s the nicest social network as if somehow mastodon has a moat on civility and niceness, it doesn’t. I’ve seen some of the nastiest things on fedi as opposed to some other spaces. To be fair Mastodon makes up 63% of fedi software actively used. There’s 1 Million MAU and the two instances owned by the Mastodon nonprofit make up 30% of that

@damon I mean, Windows has the lion's share of PC users too but I'm sure Mac users would start to get a bit irritated if pundits and everyone else only talked about how Windows is the only game in town.

@gme that’s not a comparison though. Mastodon is a part of the Fediverse and uses the dominant protocol. It’s deeper than just being two operating systems

@damon
Part of the reason Mastodon has the "market" share that it does is because very few people even mention the alternatives and too many people conflate Mastodon with the fediverse as if Eugen Rochko invented all of this.
Let us agree to disagree. -

@gme I think we have to go beyond that. Mastodon was the first to implement ActivityPub
