It recently occurred to me that I have never changed the needles in my overlocker. Hmmm. So I dug out the manual to check which ones it needs, and I’m flipping through this book realising that a) it does a shitload more things than I realise and b) I’ve also never cleaned or oiled or serviced it.
I have owned this machine for 9 years. ️ #sewing

@web_goddess it’s the sign of a well designed and engineered machine that it can accidentally go without servicing, because who cares, it’ll work fine. See also Japanese motorbikes from the 1970s and 1980s
-
@liamvhogan My fear/hope is that after today it purrs like a kitten and I didn’t even realise I was driving it too far
-
@web_goddess imagine you pull a Japanese motorbike out of the sea, where it has been for a decade. Drain all the salt water out. Add new oil, fresh petrol, new brake fluid and replace the battery and the tyres, and it’ll kick over and probably pass a rego check. I assume your overlocker is the same

Uuuuufffffff #sewing
-
@web_goddess has it caught fire yet? No? I reckon you're doing OK
-
@liamvhogan @web_goddess Also, if you do change the blades? Suddenly its like a new machine.
And have you cleaned your sewing machine lately? (Cheeky additional thought) -
@caity @liamvhogan Me, just now: The sewing machine is sealed! There’s no maintenance to be done.
After checking the manual: Sonofa…
(No oiling, but there’s lint to clean out.)
-
@web_goddess @caity new sparkplugs, new air and fuel filters, flush the carbs with cleaner, start it again
-
-
@web_goddess @caity for comparison, this is what happens if you don't service a bicycle for fourteen years (from my lockdown 'service my bicycle' project)
-
@liamvhogan @caity I had to read the alt text to even understand what I was looking at. How… did that happen?!
-
@web_goddess @caity it happens by me reading the servicing manual, thinking 'how bad can this be, right?, following the steps, and finding out how bad it can be
-
@liamvhogan @caity So exactly like me and the overlocker. Thankfully my intervention didn't require a bucket though.
