"bluesky has starter packs. ergo, the fediverse needs starter packs."
we had the means for decentralized account recommendation in mastodon years and years ago. you could feature other accounts on your profile. like a blog roll.
of course, I think it's been completely eliminated from the actual profile page anymore.
and we've had folks - curators - maintaining a few different directories of folk who wanted to be found associated with the topics they wanted to be found under for many many years as well.
fuck if I understand why we feel compelled to chase someone else's marketingspeak at every opportunity.

@djsundog I'm not on BlueSky but I've seen a few people here who are very pissed that people can just add you to a starter park without your permission, making it very easy for people who suffer abuse to be found by abusive people.

@djsundog I think the concept (both BlueSky's and Mastodon's equivalent efforts over the years) is a hell of a lot better than Twitter's "here, follow a bunch of brands and cryptofascist celebrities!", but consent is key.

yeah, 100%. I was talking about that in https://blahaj.zone/notes/a0hsqvt7a1gs019y

@[email protected] I do agree with your point that starter packs aren't the only mechanism that makes sense. Conceptually there are several things rolled into a starter pack:
- each account can have multiple named lists of recommended accounts and feeds on each profile (they're o the 'starter page' tab of the profile), basically along the lines of the old Mastodon functionality (or indieweb's blogrolls etc etc)
- a follow all button
- signing up with a starter pack (i'm not sure whether or not it automatically does a follow all)
