Turns out every photo of the inside of a cupboard is from wealthy, English language countries. And they're so hilariously staged.
Like, where do you live that you store carrots and cauliflower in the cupboard at room temperature? Or have twelve unopened bottles of hot sauce (believable) on a rotating shelf (why? They're all the same and unopened).
Also there are only two types of organised Mum (I won't say woman, because it's only Mums/Moms): you can decant everything into beige containers and never buy packeted food, or you can have an entire pantry for chips and canned drinks. There is no in between.

If anyone wanted to really do an anthropological deep dive on white/anglo cis het womanhood, I feel like this is an interesting jumping off point.
Edited to add "het". I don't have evidence that the queers are doing this.
That said, *I'm* looking it up because I love organised spaces. But I am a white, anglo, cus, het-adjacent woman.

@keira_reckons that would absolutely be an interesting topic of study especially since the expansion into fridgescaping and other kitchen organisation social media content.
As someone with wonky object permanence (once it goes in a cupboard I forget it exists, might forget the whole cupboard exists) I don’t know if I should aspire to be so rigorously organised or to resent the trend

@joannaholman I love pretty stuff, so I've had old coffee jars to store beans and grains for a while (a decade?), and it does help me see what I have easily.
But I think the choice is about sacrificing time for order - it takes a lot of maintenance.

@keira_reckons @joannaholman From what I gather, the multiple fridges with one just stacked with drinks and another for food is a thing for residents of American McMansions.
And all the drinks are purchased in bulk from CostCo...
-
@ajsadauskas @keira_reckons yup there’s whole linked culture and economic systems in play for this to be a viable vision. You’re probably not doing bulk restocks of your kitchen unless you have a big car (kinda tricky on public transport), live in a big house and have a family big enough to consume the stuff before it goes bad

@joannaholman @ajsadauskas @keira_reckons Good point re Costco and car use. We live in a CBD apartment and we generally do a big shop via online ordering every two-three weeks, so it is possible to buy larger amounts without a car. But we have to plan carefully in order not to throw away fruit & veg.

@timrichards @joannaholman @ajsadauskas @keira_reckons the nicely laid out plates that are outside and not in a cupboard make me wonder who cleans them
