For me it sounds like "Internet is difficult, only nerds are there" or "I can't see myself bookmarking a website" or "I prefer the commercial, social and paid services instead the free ones".
People also still dislike "the rules" without realizing the endless Terms of Service exist literally in every single thing you use.
I mean, it's not hard, but if is, nobody forces you to use it, right? Why twist the narrative to something it does not fit?

@rolle but Mastodon *is* difficult. The username/server thing is just the beginning, and tip of the iceberg. The real issues start when you have to try and explain why a profile is empty, why all replies are not shown when opening a message, that a search for a hashtag doesn’t find your tagged post.
Those are incredibly messy and even seasoned users don’t necessarily get it. The solutions are not easy, but are possible. But nobody currently seems to be tackling them.
