So, here's my crazy game idea that most likely won't work, I'm just talking out of my ass and I'm not a game dev:
Imagine if there was an "MMO" style game, but instead of 1 massive world that's controlled by 1 server or a bunch of servers by 1 company, it was "federated". Similar to how Fedi works, but to work for game maps/areas, player characters and inventories, etc and able to be hosted by the community.
You'd be able to load in on a server that has a limited scope of map with a limited amount of players but if you wanted to connect to a different server, it wouldn't be through a menu, but through some sort of in-game portal or something. Then, when going to that server, your player stats and inventory are carried over, you're just in a different area, maybe with unique mechanics or such.
Maybe similar to Minecraft in the way community servers are hosted, but with RPG elements, player inventories and stats carry over, and the map isn't infinite and random.
this probably sound nuts and impractical. Though, it's just an idea from a random dude with insomnia.️

@BeAware That'd be pretty cool but not easy to make happen, especially for amassive game with many maps.

@gocu54 yeah, that's what I expected when writing it.
Maybe it'd work better as actually a Minecraft Modpack or something instead of its own game, because what I'm describing, I feel could theoretically be possible with Minecraft with a specific community that would all have to agree to certain rules and collaborate on the inventory sharing type features. I just don't have the knowledge or energy to do it.
Also maybe someday the technology will allow for such things to be possible in the future.️

@[email protected] I think the developers may have invented it already. It's called sharding. ESO and GW2 use it.
-
@BeAware So.. Roblox?
-
@AterNox I can't host a GW2 or ESO server though...
-
@Sibshops nah. Something more mature and not just mini games. One single game like...an MMO. Roblox is like GMod, no? I can't take a gun from a server into one that doesn't have guns, because they are running different game modes, right? That's not exactly it.
-
@[email protected] Sorry I thought you were sicussingvthe technology and not trying to code a game for yourself.
-
@AterNox nah nah. Not code game, but something like Minecraft, with the technology of GW2 and ESO, if that makes sense and more RPG elements, but still with community hosted servers. I don't think it exists yet.
I'm not coding anything, just coming up with an idea that may or may not work.
